What is a Tile Calculator?
A tile calculator is an essential planning tool for any flooring or wall tiling project. It helps you determine the exact number of tiles, the amount of tile adhesive, and the grout quantity required to cover a given area. Accurate tile estimation prevents costly shortages (which may cause batch color mismatch) and excessive over-ordering.
Popular Tile Sizes in India
Indian tile manufacturers offer a wide range of sizes. The most popular floor tile sizes are:
- 60 × 60 cm (2×2 ft): The most popular size for residential flooring, available in vitrified, glazed, and matte finishes.
- 80 × 80 cm: Large-format tiles that create a seamless look with fewer grout lines.
- 60 × 120 cm: Rectangular slab tiles popular for modern, minimalist interiors.
- 30 × 30 cm (1×1 ft): Commonly used for bathroom and kitchen floors, balconies, and outdoor areas.
- 30 × 45 cm: Standard wall tile size for kitchens and bathrooms.
Understanding Wastage
Wastage in tiling occurs due to cutting tiles to fit edges, corners, and around obstacles (pipes, columns, fixtures). The amount of wastage depends on the laying pattern:
- Straight lay: 5-10% wastage — tiles are laid in a simple grid pattern.
- Diagonal (45°) lay: 10-15% wastage — more cuts required at walls.
- Herringbone / Chevron: 15-20% wastage — complex patterns require many angled cuts.
- Random / Versailles pattern: 10-15% wastage depending on size variations.
Grout and Adhesive Estimation
Tile adhesive is applied in a 6-8 mm thick bed using a notched trowel. Approximately 4 kg of adhesive per square meter is the standard consumption rate for medium-format tiles on a level surface. For large-format tiles (≥80 cm) or uneven substrates, consumption may increase to 5-6 kg/m².
Grout fills the gaps between tiles. The amount depends on tile dimensions, gap width, and tile thickness. Our calculator uses the standard formula: Grout Volume = Gap Width × Tile Thickness × Total Joint Length, converted to kg using grout density (~1.6 kg/L).
Pro Tips for Tiling
- Always buy tiles from the same lot/batch to ensure consistent shade and calibration.
- Use tile spacers to maintain uniform grout lines.
- Start laying tiles from the center of the room outward for a symmetrical finish.
- Keep 2-3 extra tiles after installation for future repairs and replacements.
